CALLIE

THREE WEEKS LATER

“So?” I say, leaning forward in my seat at the bar, both eager and nervous to see Zach’s reaction. “What do you think?”

It’s a Friday night, and we’re seated side by side at a small bar near Zach’s apartment. We’ve been dating for over three weeks now and have been seeing each other nearly nonstop. Things between us feel…well, serious isn’t the right word, because we have so much fun with each other. Maybe destined would be a better way to describe it.

Yeah. Destined is a good word for what we have going on.

This definitely feels meant to be.

“It looks fantastic, Callie,” Zach says, peering down at my phone, scrolling and tapping as he checks out my brand new website. “I’m not just saying that. It’s welcoming, usable, easy to understand…once we set up that photoshoot at the Sea Shanty tank, you’ll be unstoppable.”

“You really think people will hire me through it?” I ask. “Be honest.”

“Absolutely. It’s just going to be a matter of driving traffic to the site. But you’re great with social media, so I bet you’ll get a lot of traffic that way. And I’m more than happy to help you with paid advertising if that’s something you want to do, too.”

Giddiness bubbles in my chest. I wrap my arms around Zach and give him a grateful hug as I lay a kiss on his cheek. I’m still nervous about my website going live—cutting my hours at The Sea Shanty to try to pick up gigs on my own is intimidating—but Zach’s support makes me a whole lot less worried about taking the leap. He’s been incredibly supportive and believes in me so much, and I know that even if I fail, I’ll be glad that I gave it a shot.

I lean my elbow on the bar and rest my cheek in my hand as I look at my man. He takes a sip of his beer, then catches my lingering gaze and breaks into a grin.

“What?” he asks. “Something on my face?”

I laugh and nudge his knee with my own. “Just handsomeness.”

“Shit, baby. You’re gonna make me blush.”

I could spend the rest of my life with this man. The thought hits me like a thunderbolt. It nearly knocks me out of my seat. But as soon as I think it, I know it’s true.

“Callie?”

At the sound of Jared’s voice, my good mood evaporates. Fuck.

“Who is this asshole?” Jared asks, coming up to us. He’s drunk and slurring his words. “You’re seeing other guys?”

“Oh my God,” I mutter. Anger surges through me and I whip around on my stool. “There are no ‘other guys,’ Jared. You and I are broken up. I dumped you. Why can’t you accept that and leave me the fuck alone?”

While I’ve been speaking my mind, Zach has stood up, putting himself between me and Jared. “You heard her. Get the fuck out of here.”

Jared blinks at him. “You’re the guy from the parking lot.”

“Yeah, and I’ve run out of patience,” Zach says.
